DM3108 - Negotiated Game Placement:

'Slackers is a chaotic multiplayer game where the players are undercover aliens infiltrating various human workplaces via a fake temp agency with the mission to destabilize the workforce sector through ridiculous inefficient sabotage.’
As 3rd Years, we were tasked with securing a placement for work experience relating to our field of study. Originally, I had secured a placement working with an indie game studio as an Art Intern. Unfortunately, they did not have the necessary insurance for it to be officially recognised by the university as I would not be able to submit the required 80 hours on InPlace.
Fortunately, I could take part in a client project. This project was ‘Slackers’ the Alien Temp Agency Chaos Game by RaRa Games. Despite being a group project for the 2nd year students, I was allowed to work on a solo aspect on any of the design elements I liked. I chose to make a range of props that could be used to build out a scene.
Sustainable Development
A hot topic in the game development world right now is the use of generative AI. Whilst it can be a useful tool in streamlining development, It has an incredibly adverse effect on the planet (). Training and running AI models requires a significant amount of energy, contributing to carbon emissions in the atmosphere and consuming resources far beyond what our planet can provide. This aligns closely to Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production (). To ensure this issue can be minimised on my end, no AI will be used in this project.
Additionally, when designing 3D models it is important to consider how inefficient topology increases computational load. This is why topology should be optimised and efficient as well as the prioritisation of producing LODs, aligning itself with SDG 12 and improving the experience on the player’s end.
